Stupid people

I'll admit that my brain is a little mushy right now. Sometimes what I want to say does not come out right. I blame Stowaway. Little tiny zombie baby. But honestly, what I heard today from a fellow pregnant woman (who had to have been around 25) made my jaw drop.

I was at the pharmacy today waiting for my prescription. A very pregnant woman walked up to the pharmacy counter. Her prescription was not ready yet either so she sat down next to me. She asked how far along I was. She was shocked that I was already 20 weeks. She said she was much bigger when she was 20 weeks. I then asked her how far along she was. She said she was 34 weeks pregnant with twin girls. Umm, ok. No wonder you were showing more at 20 weeks. I just told her that she looked great.

Then she told me how lucky I was that my baby was pulling on the cord. Yeah, I was confused at this point too.

Stupid Lady: You're really lucky that your baby is playing with the cord.
Me: What?
SL: Your belly button isn't sticking out. That means that the baby is pulling on the cord. If the baby doesn't pull on the cord your belly button will pop out.
Me: What are you talking about?
SL: Since I'm having twins they have each other to play with so they don't play with the cord. That's why my belly button popped out.
Me: Are you talking about the umbilical cord?
SL: Yeah.
Me: You're kidding right?
SL: What? I just wish that my babies would have pulled on the cord more often. I don't like have an outie.

Yes she was totally serious about this. The pharmacists were trying to hold back the laughter. Her mom was standing nearby nodding in approval. Apparently, SL's mom agreed with this theory.

Me: You do know that the baby's umbilical cord is not connected to YOUR belly button, right?
SL: Yes it is. That's where the cord attaches.
Me: No. No it is not. The umbilical cord is attached to the placenta and the baby. Your belly button is essentially a scar from where your umbilical cord attached to you when you were a fetus. Your babies each have their own umbilical cords that are in no way attached to your belly button.
SL: (said with a very cranky tone) If that were true, then why would my belly button pop out?

At this point one of the pharmacists came over to the counter and said that I was right. SL and her mom were shocked. I was shocked. The pharmacist even showed her a brochure that had a picture of a baby in-utero that showed the umbilical cord attached to the baby and the placenta.

How can someone be that stupid? Seriously. Did she never bring this up to her doctor? Or did her doctor think she was joking and just go along with it? Did she not read any pregnancy books or anything online? How about a high school biology class? And for her mom (who must have been at least 50 some years old) to believe that this is true as well? Un-freaking-believable.

Itchy says that I should have been nicer. I say that stupid people shouldn't talk to me.

I can't really trust Itchy's opinion on this one. He did call me today to tell me that he was done at school and that I could pick him up. That wouldn't be a problem except that I DIDN"T DRIVE HIM TO SCHOOL. He drove himself. Dumbass.

I caved

I had been trying really hard to live without the air conditioner on. Sure I was hot, but really The Island was always this hot. Usually worse. Certainly I could live without AC. I have fans in every room. Positioned so that they are blowing directly on me and me alone. Sorry Itchy. Since it's just me and the cats here, I can wear whatever I want (i.e. tank top and way too short shorts). The freezer has plenty of popsicles. I thought I'd be able to do this.

I caved though. Once the temp in here hit about 88 degrees I couldn't take it. I don't know how hot it was outside. It almost felt a little cooler outside. Crazy. It was often like that on The Island though. Our apartment (aka The Oven) would be hotter than the outside. And seriously, 88 degrees inside was pretty normal.

It's so much more comfortable in here now. What is considered a normal room temperature? I have the thingy set at 78. I'm still hot all the time but Itchy and the cats are comfortable at this temp. I don't even want to imagine our heating bill for this winter. It's all relative though right? 78 seems to cool to us because it's so hot outside, so this winter 70 will seem warm because it's so cold outside. That's how it's going to work right?

Aside from that, life is flying by. It's only 8 more days until the ulratsound. I can't believe I'm halfway through the pregnancy. This is crazy to me. When I realized this I decided I needed to do something to get ready. So logically I started cross stitching a little something for the baby. Because we all know that babies need homemade crafts. I've already demanded a crocheted
blanket and a quilt from Grandma. Carseats, cribs, and diapers? Bah! We'll have crafts!!!

I have been researching baby gear too. It's not all just fun and games. I've been looking at "must have" lists. Why does Stowaway need all that stuff? And why are there so many options for each item? Do I really need 23 different swings to choose from? How about you make one really good one in 3 or 4 standard patterns (maybe make custom ones if people are going to be choosy) and we go from there? Having too many options gives me anxiety. My brain (which is turning to mush, I'm entirely convinced that Stowaway is a zombie) just doesn't like that many options. Which, by the way, is part of the reason why I hate Subway. Thanks to Al Gore though for inventing the internet. I can sit at home, research all these options, and freak out at home instead of having a breakdown in Target.

You still have 8 days to vote in the poll if you haven't yet.

Study Guide

Now that the date has been set for the ultrasound, I thought I'd put together a study guide of sorts for you. Not sure why the other poll disappeared, but I had to make a new one. So if you voted already, that vote will not count. Sorry.

I looked up the Old Wives Tales that are suppose to predict gender. Most of these sound pretty silly to me. Since the gender options are rather limited, the odds of these being right are pretty good.

Here are some of the OWTs:

1. If the hair on your legs is not growing any faster during your pregnancy, it's a girl
My hair does seem to be growing faster (boy)
2. Boys are carried low, and girls are carried high
I'm carrying Stowaway in my uterus, is that high or low? (?)
3. If your feet are colder than they were before pregnancy, you are having a boy
I'm hot all of the time (girl)
4. If you had morning sickness early in pregnancy you're having a girl
I had morning sickness (girl)
5. If a needle on a thread held over you belly moves from side-to-side, it will be a girl -- if it moves in circles, a boy
The needle does not move. At all. (?)
6. If you are craving sweets, it is a girl -- craving salty, it's a boy
What does sour mean? (?)
7. If your baby's heart rate is below 150 beats per minute, it's a boy -- above 150, it's a girl
156 bpm (I'd say this is pretty borderline, but we'll go with girl)
8. If you are having headaches during pregnancy, it's a boy
Headaches nearly everyday (boy)

So of those 8, 2 say boy, 3 say girl, and 3 are inconclusive. Now supposedly the Chinese are able to predict gender based on the month the baby was conceived and the mother's age. The Chinese chart says boy. The Mayan's predict the gender based on the mother's age and the year of conception. If the age and the year are both even, it's a girl. Well, I'm 28 and it's 2009 so I guess the Mayan's would say boy.

As far as my intuition, it's broken. It fluctuates all the time. Itchy thinks it's a boy.

So given all of that, go ahead and vote in the poll.

Stowaway's first checkup

Well Stowaway and I had our first real checkup today. Sorry that it took so long kid, but we're poor.

Things seem to be progressing just fine (even without medical attention). My blood pressure is a little low but other than that I seem to be doing well. Stowaway's heart beat was heard. The nurse said it sounded strong and healthy. It was 156 bpm.

They don't really like to give a due date because it's misleading. They do however think that my estimate is right on and they agree that I'm due in early November. This is of course based on fundal height. I'm not really sure how accurate that is but apparently at this stage it's usually pretty close. So we are all going to assume that I am 19 weeks pregnant.

The ultrasound is in two weeks. Unfortunately, Itchy won't be able to make it. They don't do ultrasounds (unless it's an emergency) on the weekends. Hopefully they print out some pictures or something.

Don't forget to vote in the poll.

Happy Birthday to Itchy

It's Itchy's birthday today. We're not doing anything special. He has school and he's on call. He was on call all weekend long. We did go out to eat and to the Star Trek movie on Friday night. We'll just pretend that was for his birthday.

He got his gift on Saturday though. He got to feel the baby kick for the first time. I was going to get him something but how am I suppose to top that? I mean really? Feeling your first child kick for the very first time, I can't beat that.

I did make him a cake though. To be honest, I mostly made it because I want cake. His birthday was just an excuse.

Happy birthday Itchy!

Boring drivel

Itchy and I finally found dressers that we could afford. Well, we really can't but we needed them. It was more like we found dressers that we were willing to pay for. While I was busy unpacking the suitcases and getting things put away I noticed that I have a lot of socks. An unbelievable amount. Especially when you consider that I lived in flip flops for the last 3 years.

The second observation is that my space bar is not working properly. It's annoying.

Also, I had forgotten just how annoying telemarketers are. I've had three of them call already today. I'll be looking for the do not call info later today.

2 things

First of all, I finally figured out how to set up our wireless internet. No more piggy backing for us. Our connection is secure so no one else can piggy back us. Ha ha.

Second, Stowaway had the hiccups tonight. I'm certain that is what it was. I really hope that this kid is not affected by the hiccups the way that I am. I get them all too often, for way too long, and nothing helps to get rid of them. So Stowaway, I'm sorry you inherited that from me.

Well, I was wrong

Last night we got a call from Itchy's parents!!!

I was very surprised to say the least. Maybe they read the blog? Who knows, but it actually went very well.

First of all, the best news was that Itchy's mom is free of cancer!!! She went from stage 4 cancer (in March) to cancer free! She still has some chemo to get through and more testing that needs to be done, but as of right now, she is cancer free. That was the best news we could have ever expected. It is a huge relief for everyone.

She also asked about Stowaway. She talked to Itchy a bit and than he gave the phone to me. I wasn't thrilled with that, mostly because it's awkward talking to her (and you know, because she hates me), but I talked to her. She asked how I was feeling, when my next appointment is, if I felt kicking, etc. She seemed excited and happy to find out that we were going to find out Stowaway's gender (maybe because I told her that Itchy is getting his way- he wants to know and I don't). She also invited me to stay in their house, with them, before and after the baby is born. Her plan is that I could go stay with them prior to the birth, give birth there, and than stay with them for the first month or so. She first brought this up to Itchy. He basically said no way in hell. When she brought it up to me, I thanked her for the generous offer and than told her that it would break Itchy's heart if he wasn't going to be able to be there for the birth. There is no way that he'd be okay with me running off to have the baby somewhere else and then staying away from him for a month. I told her that he wants to be as hands on as he can be, even if that means he gets to hold the baby for an hour everyday.

I did invite her out here though. I told her that I'd love to have them come out here once the baby is born so that they can meet their grandbaby. As much as it stresses me out to think about having them here, I really do want them to be involved. Especially since they reacted so well to everything that's be thrown to them. I know they don't like me, but as long as they are nice to my face I really don't care. We can all just play nice. It'll make Itchy happy to have his parents around.

Itchy's mom seems genuinely excited about the baby. Itchy's dad, well, I don't think he's all that thrilled. I think he may be a little worried that Stowaway is a girl. Itchy's mom is going to go nuts if it's a girl. Spoiled won't even begin to describe it.

So I was very wrong about the situation. I'm glad about that. This is how it should be.

Over one week later

Still haven't heard from Itchy's parents. Grrr. It's a good thing Itchy is so busy with school, I don't think he's noticed. But I have. I'll be keeping mental notes of this.

In other Stowaway news, I can feel movement. Itchy hasn't felt anything yet, but well, he's hardly ever here. Poor Cuddles felt it though. It freaked him out. He was sitting in my lap, cuddling (it's what he does), and the baby kicked*. Prior to that I thought I had felt something but wasn't sure. There was no second guessing that kick though. Definitely Stowaway. Cuddles must have felt it because he flew out of my lap. Poor dude. He looked pretty confused.

Now I'm feeling it on a pretty regular basis. It's kind of weird to think that there's a person in my uterus.

Even though I don't know when I'll get to find out, I made a poll for you to guess Stowaway's gender. It's just for fun. There are no prizes if you are right. Unless you insist, in which case, I'll send you a bag of cat hair.

*It could have been a kick, punch, headbutt, etc. I really don't know.
